United PCS is working to ensure that Pacific Collegiate School (PCS) is a place where students are excited to spend their youth and teachers are excited to spend their careers. While PCS is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the 8th Best High School in California and is #1 in the Santa Cruz Metro Area, our salaries rank at or near the bottom when compared to other local school districts in Santa Cruz County. Moreover, we have the longest work year in the county, despite having some of the lowest pay. Turnover has been high in recent years, a trend that United PCS wants to see changed. Twenty faculty members have departed and been replaced in the last five years (there are 37 faculty members total); 12 stayed for one year or less.
It's time for PCS to finally set a meaningful path forward on fair wages and a stable future for the school and its teachers. United PCS educators are fighting for the stable school our students deserve. We know that our students deserve to learn in classrooms filled with qualified, committed educators who can stay year after year.
At the bargaining table, we have repeatedly proposed reasonable solutions we believe are necessary to ensure a better future for our students, educators, parents, and community.
We are working without a contract for the second year in a row. After bargaining for fifteen months, we declared impasse last March. Our school has a record budget surplus, enrollment is up, and state funding is up. There is more than enough money to invest in keeping educators at PCS and we are willing to do whatever it takes for a fair contract.
